The President of the university came to our dorm to answer questions and just have a general discussion with us. It was such a great opportunity. People asked such great and intelligent questions that he responded to with wisdom that comes from years of experience. Then he responded to my question, "What makes you feel like a little kid again?" with the answer "Ice cream and just a small bite of cotton candy." I feel like I got smarter and more cultured just by listening to him talk for two an hour. It was great to meet with him on a much smaller and more personal scale. I could go on and on.... but homework calls.

This is what my day looks like, GIVE ME A BREAK, I just got out of Midterms!
I guess I actually won't be going to all of these today, It's not physically possible. But having a schedule look like this is very overwhelming.

I won't grow up! / You are never to old to...
CARVE PUMPKINS! It's Halloween time and people get excited. Baked goodies, candy, perfect company, and pumpkin carving. A great way to spend the evening between midterms. As my family knows, I try to stick to a solid rule of no studying the night before a big test. Some studying early can pass as acceptable (which I did for both my midterms) but then the rest of the night should let the brain relax and settle in. It's a muscle, I'm an athlete, don't let it get tired out.
This was my favorite pumpkin someone carved. The Stanford symbol :) I think it's awesome. Some other great ones include Karel (the robot that we learned to program way back when in week 1 of college), C-House (the name of my dorm, Cedro), and Kaya's dancing people.
Kaya and I and our pumpkins. Mine is a witch's hat, I know it's hard to tell. I had a meeting during the session so I had less time to carve. It's also very important to note that the witch's hat is not just any witch's hat and is not a Halloween reference, it's a Wicked (the musical) reference. I carved Elphaba's hat. Did you really think I was going to be mainstream about pumpkin carving?
Time to Rewind
Relaxing after first midterm and before the next one. Getting out of the Stanford Bubble and chilling by watching The Daily Show. Number One source for current events and immediate laughter / happiness :)
Did all I could. Left it all out on the floor.
First college midterm complete! I was really well prepared for it but some of the questions were weirdly worded or just seemed like they had multiple answers based on how you interpreted the question. But I feel really good about it. And I finished the test and checking my answers with 15 minutes to spare! Let's hope the next one goes just as well.
It's a big deal.
I am sitting in an auditorium for my first midterm in college ever. Wow. Is it weird or bad that I am more excited than nervous? I am here twenty minutes early so there isn't too much for me to be stressed about. Other than remembering 5 weeks of information on communications. Woo hoo!

College - It's about branching out
Today, Kaya and I took a risk and did not go to Wilbur brunch. Wilbur brunch is what we are used to. It's right outside our front door and is filled with all the crepes, smoothies, waffles, bagels, biscuits, paninis, and omelets that we are so fond of having Saturday and Sunday morning. So this morning, we mustered up our courage and ventured one block North to Arrillaga dining. We decided that college was about trying new things and we should be able to at least try some food in other dining halls.
The long journey was rewarded. We were met with the greatest trophy of them all, berries. Berries, the number one food missed by college students. They weren't even frozen. Real fresh strawberries and raspberries. A miracle to say the least. We piled our plates high and went back for seconds. There was also freshly baked scones, fruit and greek yogurt, blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs and egg whites, and even plates of crackers, cheese, and dried fruit. What a way to start the day!

Dress up! It's Halloween Time
The costume of the night was Chris and Alyssa as Gatsby and Daisy. (They are a couple)
Here is my attempt at getting a view of everyone dressed up. It's done quite poorly.
I am a Jackson Polluck painting and Kaya is a flapper girl.
The Halloween tradition is that everyone dresses up and goes to a dance party at the Mausoleum, Leland Stanford Jr.'s grave. We had a fun time. The best part was trying to fit our entire dorm into the photo booth.
Food! - I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream
College students get really really really really excited about real ice cream (not the frozen yogurt that comes out of a machine that is there at every single meal). Dessert last night was a sundae bar. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream with chocolate chips and whip cream on top. It's the life. Be jealous :)

Dorm Days - TGIF
We have a TGIF every Friday (duh... ) and it's always super cool and fun. We had a barbecue with all the people who previously lived in our dorm. We had a ice cream social. Today, was popsicles and ice cream sandwiches out on the field with ultimate frisbee.
Dorm Days - Resident Baker
Today, our Resident Baker, Kylie, baked cookies. There were warm and soft and melted in your mouth. It's so wonderful. Just another plus to the freshman dorm and being at college is that there is a whole mix of people with amazing talents and experiences. We are do things for each other and help each other out. Absolutely fantastic. We all certainly love Kylie's contribution.
That moment when.... College Textbooks are Way Better than High School Ones
Oh yeah... my Computer Science textbook made a reference to Lord of the Rings.
Also note: Harry Potter was previously quoted.... TWICE!
Dorm Days
Last night we hooked up the Kinect/XBox360 and played Just Dance. It's kinda like Dance Dance Revolution except you are not stepping on tiles. We have actually been hearing a lot about the Kinect in communications class. There is absolutely no remote or controller involved. All the controlling is done with your body by tracing 26? different parts specifically. So you dance in front of the screen and it assesses how well you match the choreography that you are following. It is so cool and really really fun. The technology is astounding.

Is anyone else reading this besides my mom?
I look down the blog everyday and I swear it mostly just has one view per post I make. Thank you for being such a great supporter mom, but I don't think anyone else is reading. Oh well, I guess I enjoy talking to myself.
Green Chile Green Chile Green Chile, Oh Yeah... Green Chile!
WOO HOO! Mommy brought me some green chile with her when she visited. I ate half of a package already. Unfortunately our dining hall serves a lot of Asian cuisine so it's difficult to find appropriate uses for the green chile. But today, I there was PIZZA! Green chile and Pizza!! It made my life. It smelled like home, it tasted like home, and was so delicious. Didn't taste spicy at all to me either. I loved it!!!! Now I just need some sopapillas, anyone know where I could get some fresh out of the oven?
Oh! and this was just a preliminary photo. I slathered that green chile on there hard. Believe me, the pizza was covered in it. Those piles are just like what I had on every bite. It was so good :)

Up Up and Away Again!
Back to work four hours later :) I am inspired by today's The Book of Awakening passage. It's called "The Way Things Are" and asks you to let go of the addiction to better ourselves and be content with you have. The exercise at the end of the passage asks that, "As you exhale, feel the soreness around all you want. As you inhale, feel the mystery at center where nothing is lacking." Reading this I am reminded that I have the most amazing life in front of me at the moment. Even in the very present, with no sleep and what barely feels like a paper, I can look at all that I have learned and had in the past 24 hours. I have learned so much about a topic I am passionate about. I have done so much research and worked really hard. I have had the companionship of the most brilliant young minds in the world who also struggle at times like this. So I am going to look at the day with acceptance and gratefulness for what I have been able to do and appreciate every little more thing I can accomplish today. It is all a miracle. I am reminded of the times I have been sick and my Daddy comforts me by telling me, "Ari, anything you can do today is an accomplishment. Just try and do each little thing you can, tell yourself that, and you will feel better." Well, there are many kinds of sickness. My sickness today is stress, sleep deprivation, and procrastination. But I will take that advice to heart and also claim that you don't even need to have a sickness at hand to accept those words of advice. Be grateful today :)
Very entertaining morning
I am going to bed for a couple hours. See you then!! And for the record... people get silly when they are trying to get things done early in the morning/late at night. At least this is the atmosphere where we laugh/cry about it together. Everyone is here for each other and work together to get through it. It is surprising how little seriousness there is in these moments of panic. I am really happy I am experiencing this type of working. It should not be missed. People are so silly and happy. Looking on the bright side :)
At least I am not alone.
Fortunately, I have some company in the lounge. There is a group of people who haven't finished their Math 51 and CME 100 problem sets that are due tomorrow (Calculus). Is it bad that I really hope they don't finish anytime soon because I want the company? oops...
AND... I am so delirious that I started laughing really hard at the fact that this is my 51st blog post. And I was referring to Math 51 in the post. haha.....ha....hahaha....ha.......hahahahahaahahahahahahaha.....haha

Unfortunate morning rant!
So... I have been working on my paper since 7pm tonight. I took one 1/2 hour break to eat more food, have some yerba mate, and get some support from friends. Now I am in our student lounge pounding away at a hopelessly terrible attempt to get some kind of rough draft ready for school tomorrow. The paper is supposed to be around 8 pages long. I have like 2 1/2 pages of terrible organized randomness of facts with some of my own words mixed in with the quotes. I didn't even realize how much work this would be and how much I actually procrastinated until tonight. Probably pulling a basic all nighter but I will hopefully be in better shape for the revision and final draft due in one week. Please remind me to work on it sooner. Anyway, back to work......

So that anyone doesn't get the wrong idea.... another Academic Episode
So people don't think I am just stuffing my face with cheesecake. I am back in the library. I will be here all night long. Seriously.... all night long. 8 page paper due tomorrow that I haven't started... HERE I COME! YOU ARE GOING DOWN! Or maybe just whatever I can pump out that can pass as my rough draft. ;)
REPEAT! of the best kind...
CHEESECAKE!! AGAIN!! WITH STRAWBERRIES!!!
I was so excited I put my face in the photo this time. ...... My excited face.....
I was so excited I put my face in the photo this time. ...... My excited face.....
Another annoying food post :)
CHEESECAKE! Never before seen in Wilbur dining until last night and it was TOP NOTCH! So good. I think it might have been better than the bread pudding....
Rally! Rally! Rally!
Rally gear is anything crazy you can find. Typical items include patterned tights, tutus, glitter, and neon. All of us freshman weren't told we would need it or we would have brought awesome costumes (I have so much stuff I need to bring when I come back winter quarter!). So this is very very very very conservative rally gear. We will do better next time!

An Academic Episode: Why don't I listen to good advice?
I would take a picture of the room I am currently sitting in but it is so quiet people would freak out at the noise coming from my phone to take the picture. It's the most beautiful room (notice how I specify something indoors) on campus. People don't usually want to be inside, but I have a hard time studying outside so this is really nice. Anyway, it is really easy to crack down and do work in a library. WHY DIDN'T ANYONE EVER TELL ME THAT? Just kidding. Everyone did. SO NOW I AM GOING TO TELL EVERYONE. There are very few distractions in a completely isolated and silent library room. This is about as far as distractions go....I guess in addition to texting.... oops. But seriously, my head clears and I can focus on my tasks. I still have a really really long way to go on my work (why didn't anyone ever tell me not to procrastinate? jk... they did) but I feel more organized about it.
P.S. Thank you blog for serving as a nice break.

Thoughts to be considered (An Academic Episode)
I was doing my weekly current event for communications on selfies and thought I should maybe share the article and my short commentary one it with those who see many of my selfies. Share you thoughts as well! I love that I get to share bits and pieces of my life through this blog but one part I really don't like is the fact that its one-sided communication. I never get to hear what anyone thinks, whether anyone is reading the blog, or how everyone else is doing. It's not a conversation and I really wish it was. Anyway, I also feel silly taking so many pictures of myself. It makes me feel vain and self-conscious and I do feel like I am interrupting the activity that I am doing so that is why I definitely don't agree with a lot of what the article says. The link is to my one pager on it and inside the one page you can link to the original article. For those who don't know what a selfie is, ask you children.

Visitors: Making Me Feel Loved
My mom came this weekend! We had a wonderful time talking, catching up, going to SF to see Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, going to Cha Cha Cha for dinner, and staying the night at the beach house. Here are some pictures from our time:
The must have chicken paillard (sauce for me), new potatoes, plantains, spinach and feta empanada, sautéed mushrooms, and bread! What a meal!
Carole King music is SO my mom. I totally remembered all the songs from growing up so this was such a great show for us to see together.
I love you mom! Thanks for coming. See you again soon.

Game Day
Game Day! Be a man and turn on the football. Grab a beer, jiggle your keeps at kick off, do the first down cheer, sing to "All Right Now," tweet about it, and make lots of noise on defense. Look for me on screen too! (next blog post). #GoStanford #FearTheTree #PartyInTheBackfield

Is this really a Job?
I got a job on campus working for Cardinal Nights. Cardinal Nights is an organization that organizes events on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday that do not involve alcohol. It's a way for students to party hard sober. I am so excited about this job because it is about something I really believe in but it is also a super fun job. I get paid for going to fun things. So tonight is my first night at work and we are hosting a silent disco. People get headphones which play the DJs music and dance and so it looks like a silent dance party to everyone not wearing the rocking headphones. I am sure I will be talking about the other events coming up and in addition, I will get to start planning events for the winter and spring quarter!
Food Time!
I didn't get a picture because it didn't look particularly beautiful (in fact unappealing) and I didn't think it would serve my explanation well, but the Roasted Butternut Squash at dinner tonight was so good and I wanted absolutely everyone to know!! It tasted like pumpkin pie or any amazing fall dish you can think of. It was my dessert, except that they also had cookies so I grabbed some of those for later.
Dorm Days: Piano Bar and Culure
The beautiful thing about having talented kids in all different areas and a piano in the dorm lounge is that we get a concert every couple nights or so with someone just sitting down and practicing (and the people are really good). Last night I came running down from studying to listen for a little bit. The type of music changes but its always wonderful. In addition, some of my friends were discussing favorite books (many classics), movies, and other types of "culture" as we called it. It felt very mature.

Challah for Hunger! (Say it out loud, it's an awesome name) (AND... another food post :) )
So there is a group on campus that make hundreds of loaves of challah every Thursday to sell to Stanford and the community and all of the proceeds go to the American Jewish World Service and other local organizations to help combat hunger. We have two really awesome people in our dorm who go every week and order and buy challah for us based on a group dorm donation pile. There are new flavors every week in addition to the six usual ones. This week was Coffee Chocolate Chip. I got to say... it was not my favorite. I look forward to getting a loaf of garlic rosemary all to myself next week.
If you every come visit, I will order a loaf of challah for us... hint hint nudge nudge... it's really good :)

Looking out for my twin :)
Our entire dorm is currently sick. Everyone is coughing, has a runny nose, sleep deprived, taking midterms, trying to deny their sickness, and helplessly working to get better before parents arrive this weekend. Not a happy atmosphere compared to NSO (New Student Orientation). Luckily, we are a family and all work at helping each other. My twin, Kaya, is terribly sick. I was sick this past week and know how it feels so I went to TresX to get her cough drops, kleenex, honey, and an almond joy (the only thing different between the two of us is that she likes almond joys). The chocolate is always an essential thing to making someone feel better :) At least in my book. Hopefully she will feel better when her mom and brother get here on Saturday.
Payback? Karma? Whatever...
Some may know that I went with my Dad to his 25th college reunion a couple of years ago.
It is homecoming weekend on campus and so there are reunions going on right now. I had a lot of fun at my dad's but I don't like people coming back to my campus. They are all walking, no bikes, which means they clog up the pathways and move slowing. They bring all these events with them with trucks and balloons and tents etc. which block my usual routes. These trucks also make never before seen blind spots for intersections which caused my first bicycle accident. No worries, everything is fine. I just collided with another bike. I didn't fall on the ground. No scrapes or bruises. Bicycle is ok (that REALLY matters) except for its previous injury with its front brakes that I still haven't found the time to fix. I still don't know how that happened. Oh well. And I was wearing a helmet ;) Love you Mom.

Wednesday Night Hop
I just got back from Wednesday Night Hop! Social swing dancing driving distance from campus. A previous Swingtime member with a car was nice enough to drive a couple of us. So much fun! Here is a picture of me before my first night :)
It was so much fun!!! All of the dancers were absolutely amazing. Such a welcoming and nice crowd. I never stopped dancing. Chris and Xing (the two people I went with) told the people that it was my first night there and so I a celebration dance essentially where I dance with many different people in a single dance in the center of the circle.
Can't wait to go back next week!
Social swing dancing is my source of fun and "partying" in my life. It is a place where I am always smiling and can really let go. It is just me following along and making mistakes. Making mistakes that are totally ok to make. I get to meet so many new people. Like tonight I met someone who works for Google (Dad, his name is Sam and he is in Google Analytics... maybe next trip you make we should go to Wednesday Night Hop together ;) ). Everyone has there own interesting story but you all you ever learn is their moves on the dance floor. Anyway, it felt good to get out there again and made me really happy. Now I can spend all day tomorrow studying so that I can have some more fun on Friday and get to spend time with my MOM Saturday and Sunday. Goodnight :)
Academic Episode - For the intellectuals
For those that are interested in hearing more about my classes and the things I am actually doing in them, keep reading. Otherwise, I promise to have more pictures of food coming. I didn't get one of the AMAZING bread pudding we had for dessert tonight, but if it comes back, I won't forget a picture.
Anyways, my parents are so extremely supportive and wonderful for giving me this opportunity to study at the greatest university on the planet. I am so grateful and thankful and I really am loving the academic opportunities here. I think that a lot of the time school just feels like more fun because its enjoyable, except for when things are actually do...
So I am taking three courses this quarter, PWR (Programming in Writing and Rhetoric with a focus on ideas of conservatism), CS 106A (Programming Methodology or... writing games in java), and Communications 1A (Media Technologies, People, and Society).
I had my first essay (1 of 3) due on yesterday in my PWR class. It was a Rhetorical Analysis paper where we chose any text and analyzed it. I wrote mine on "Baptize Me" from The Book of Mormon, the Broadway show. I guess I was missing my mom and excited that Albuquerque Public Schools would no longer limit my topics based on how offensive they were. You can find a final copy of my essay here: (click on the word here or copy and paste the url below into your web browser)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fHQwG3HT8Yn3WForaw-UwU1rhzm3Oj3l86w_4vkg8eA/edit?usp=sharing
For the first couple weeks in CS106A we were programming Karel the Robot. It is an easy and awesome way to learn programming. Karel's world looks a little bit like this:
After that we started learning java. We wrote many programs to draw things like targets (in my program I made it so that you could throw darts at it) and boxes and then also to compute things like the range of a list of numbers or the Pythagorean theorem. We did one that created a pyramid of bricks. I extended my program so that the pyramid was colorful and the bricks change color continuously (Thanks Brian!). So you can't see the animation, but it kinda looks like this:
If anyone has any ideas for good extensions for this game... let me know :)
Finally, Communications is mainly about the lectures and the readings. A lot of the stuff I am learning is pretty upsetting. For instance: for the first time ever there is a decrease number of applications for driver's licenses because people no longer think they need to leave the house because they feel like they can connect through the computer. It is difficult to find ways to mobilize society because everything is so personalized. Most teenagers are heavy multi taskers (when they use a media device they are usually using three to four different ones at a time) which actually damages the brain making you worse at multi tasking and less able to focus. And there are many more. Some other interesting things include: twitter is predicting elections better than polling, PowerPoint is limiting the performance of a presentation, and dogs can now tweet using a device on their collar. I am forgetting a lot of the other things that have been so mind blowing and interesting. The great part about communications is that it is so relevant to the modern world. Everyone uses these technologies many times a day. Within months new fads with social media and communication spring up and old ones die out.
My passion for the material I am learning in communications might lead me to doing research next quarter with a communications professor. I talked with my professor during office hours about some of the research he might be doing next quarter with multi tasking that I might be able to help out with. In the class part of our grade is actually participating as subjects in some of the experiments performed on campus for communications. I can't disclose what experiments I have already done but they were pretty cool.
Anyway, more on academics later.....

Another Shout Out to the Parents
Hello Everyone. Just wanted to let you know that I was just at the library picking up books for a research project I am starting on how social media impacts democratic deliberation. It's going to be super fun and I will spend many hours studying and being serious like a good ole college student.
This time with the Academic Episode, there are pictures!
So last time when I tried to let everyone know that studying is boring to blog about, no one believed me. So here are pictures to highlight that better.

Super Serious face:
Stressed face?
The very haunting and daunting library. Seriously, if anyone of you come to visit, don't let me forget to take you here. The days of calmly browsing through the library are over. You have to hunt down every book with a spear because there are so many of them.
LOTS OF BOOKS!!
