Pictured here is vegetable curry over rice, sesame ball, two kinds of mochi, cucumber and pineapple salad, cous cous (not part of the fancy chef menu), and coconut ice cream (my favorite!). I also had a serving of green tea ice cream and a thai iced tea. Yay! Luckily my appetite was better than it has been with my headaches and it put me in a little better mood from all the stress from work.

How to make a sick girl smile
Our dining hall hosted a fancy chef tonight for dining. We also had a guest speaker in the dorm, Dr. William Dement, who is the Father of Sleep and Dreams research. He teaches a class in the winter and spring called Sleep and Dreams where you get extra credit for falling asleep in his class because then he can use you for research by waking you up. I am not taking the class because I can't fall asleep in class and I don't like missing out on extra credit opportunities ;) silly me. But hearing about the importance of sleep was valuable and interesting. Back to the food:

What was interesting about sleep research? Anything new? I'd love to know. Mr. DeWitte told AP Bio that teenagers should get between 8-10 hours of sleep a night, preferably 10 hours to "rest" the brain. Eli has been going to sleep earlier :-) Is DeWitte correct?
ReplyDeleteSo I asked what the recommended about of sleep was and he really said that it was just different for every person. He says that as long as you don't get tired throughout the day and feel like you need a nap or are going to go to asleep, then you are getting enough sleep. Interestingly though, your sleep debt accumulates. So if you get 3 hours of sleep one night and you are supposed to get 8 hours, you are not "rested" again until you make up all those 5 hours in addition to the 8 you need every night. It always stays with you. In addition, he claims there is no such thing as too much sleep. If you sleep a lot more than you usually do and then feel tired the next day, it is your body telling you that you need to continue to make up your sleep debt. So I think I still have hours to make up from my all nighter a couple of weeks ago. And sleep from last weekend that I missed ;)
